Food Theory#1: Food Shortages in the World

Food Shortages, they are everywhere. Even the most developed countries in the world face food shortages and this is the situation was prevailing even before the Corona Virus Pandemic came into the picture.

This post isn’t going to be the same as the other posts on the website, it is a reality check of the world around us and how privileged we are to be able to get proper food to eat. Also this more of a fact than a theory!

The Food Theorist doesn’t just talk about recipes, experiences, and trends in the world of food but also the dark side of it and the struggles to receive proper food. Buckle up it's going to be a very dark and very saddening post.

The Food Shortage Crisis

A widespread Food Scarcity/Shortage is known as Famine and it has been part of human lives for quite a lot of time and there are various reasons to why a famine exists in the world, here are just a few of them:

1) War: Many people, don’t have enough resources or are suffering from food shortages as War takes up a lot of resources in terms of money as well as food and other essential resources, leaving none for the people of the country.

2) Poor Governance: In many countries, governance tends to be extremely poor, due to corruption, bureaucracy, bad policies, etc. These reasons can be related to why there is a famine in the country.

3) Population Imbalance: In an ever-developing world, the population of the majority of countries tends to skyrocket each year, developing countries like India(likely to overtake China as the most populous country in the world) are facing severe food shortage issues as well, due to high demand of food and a low supply of it.

2020, The Famine Nightmare continues…

The Food Scarcity is no better now, due to the Corona Virus Pandemic, the Food Scarcity has reached an all-time low. According to the United Nations, “World Faces worst food crisis for at least 50 years”. The article later talks about how the recession is likely to worsen the condition and increase the scarcity of food. The UN further states that Governments around the world have to take immediate action against this problem of food scarcity. (Source: The Guardian:

With the COVID-19 pandemic in place, production has dropped significantly and this leads to price wars and can create more shortages. Countries all over the world are suffering due to this, especially developing and under developing countries, where there aren’t any resources and people are eating from garbage bins and if there isn’t a solution towards curbing these shortages, people may be forced to Coprophagy (Consumption of Feces), there may even be a few cases of Coprophagy, and that is saddening.

What can YOU Do to help reduce the shortage?

It starts with a complex process which is: STOP WASTING FOOD.

At this moment, you may think. “What is this person talking about?” “Is he mad, how is this complex?”

Allow Me to simplify it, to put it in layman’s terms, People who tend to access good food and can eat to their heart’s content usually tend to waste food by throwing tantrums about not liking the food or stating that it isn’t up to the standard, don’t throw that food away, you’re extremely privileged to be able to get food in your plate, let only something you like. Please Acknowledge that and try making changes to your lifestyle.

Another way you can reduce the shortage is by Not Overeating, many children around the world are suffering from Malnutrition and are dying, so by not overeating and eating the right amount, whether it be Healthy or Fast Food. This may not make a difference to us, but can help lift many people out of starvation and can help them live life happily!

Here are a few facts from OzHarvest to help understand the problem:

  1. There is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone.

  2. One-third of all food produced is lost or wasted –around 1.3 billion tonnes of food –costing the global economy close to $940 billion each year.

  3. One in nine people do not have enough food to eat, that's 793 million undernourished people.

  4. If one-quarter of the food currently lost or wasted could be saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people.

  5. Almost half of all fruit and vegetables produced are wasted (that’s 3.7 trillion apples).

  6. 8% of greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused by food waste.

  7. If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after the USA and China.

  8. Eliminating global food waste would save 4.4 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide, a year, the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road.

  9. Throwing away one burger wastes the same amount of water as a 90-minute shower.

Another way to help!!!!

Some organizations are working to stop the famine and are helping those in need of food.

Here is a list of organizations:

1. Grapes India: Global Relief Activities of Poor and Ecumenical Society(GRAPES) is a secular grass root level social service voluntary organization which is a response, indeed an emotional one to the problems of illiteracy, ignorance, ill-health, malnutrition, unemployment and inadequate medical and educational facilities that were widely prevalent in backward villages in Singarayakonda Mandal of Prakasam district.

2. ActionAgainstHunger: Their primary goal is to create a better way to deal with hunger. For 40 years, they have led the global movement that aims to end life-threatening hunger for good.

There are many more like these, please do donate to these organizations, how much ever you can. Every contribution counts. I’ve done my part of contributing to these organizations, I hope you do too!

(In this case, make someone else's dream to get the basic food and necessities to live!)

All it takes is 1 pizza forgone!

It'll be healthy for us anyway!
